=============================================================================
Features of DirUtil:
=============================================================================
DirUtil was made to be a replacement for the AMIGADOS WorkBench and CLI
interfaces. It encompasses the best features of both and consumes very
little memory or disk space.
With DirUtil, you can delete 90% of the commands in your C: and SYSTEM:
directories, thereby freeing valuable space on your disks.
Unlike other file management programs, DirUtil III Plus contains all
the code you need to do normal disk functions such as COPY, DELETE,
DISKCOPY, and FORMAT. Other lesser programs make you reinsert the
SYSTEM disk to load the command.
DirUtil is cheaper than other commercial programs by at least 100%
DirUtil supports ALL AMIGADOS drives including DH0:, DH1:, AND VD0:.
=============================================================================
Limitations of demo version:
Only 12 files may be listed at a time even though the maximum is 1600.
Diskcopy will only copy one disk before aborting.
Format will only format one disk before aborting.
=============================================================================
Known problems:
Sizing the window before a previous sizing is complete will mess up
the boolean gadgets.
Highlighting a directory and then COPYING or MOVING it to itself will
cause an infinite loop.
The TYPE command is limited to 4000 lines of text. This will be increased
if the need arises.
=============================================================================
Instructions:
Filenames are printed in white in the file window. Subdirectories
are printed in orange (if you are using the default color setup).
To select/deselect a file, click on its name in the file window.
Click on one of the gadgets to take the selected action on the selected
names.
To enter a subdirectory, click on its name with the RIGHT mouse
button.
If you select a group of names, then hit a gadget you really did not
want to hit, clicking anywhere in the DirUtil window will abort
that operation. Any operation can be aborted, even reading the
directory of a disk.
Sizing the window will cause DirUtil to redo the file window so that
you can still see all the names. You may size the window at any time.
If you hit and drag the slide gadget, the names will scroll at
the same time.
The three string gadgets at the bottom are:
S: The source directory.
D: The destination gadget. This one is used to enter
destination directories, and is also where you
enter requests for directories to create.
E: The string to be passed to any file you RUN and for
various other commands that require user input.
DF0:, DF1:, DF2:, DF3:, RAM:, VD0:, HD0:, HD1: --->
If you hit the left button on these gadgets, you set
the source directory to the root of the selected device.
Hitting the right button on the gadgets sets the desti-
nation gadget to the root of the selected device.
ALL(D) --->
Select all FILES in the current directory, including
the ones "scrolled off" the window. If you hit the
right mouse button on this gadget, all DIRECTORIES
will be highlighted as well.
CLEAR --->
De-select all selected names.
COPY --->
Copy selected files to the directory specified in the
"D" gadget. "D" must be an existing directory
path and CAN go across devices. COPY preserves the
protection status (RWED) and file comment of the
original file when making the copy. If you select a
subdirectory in orange, and hit COPY DirUtil will create
that directory on the "D" disk and copy all the files to
the new directory. Although normally blocked out since it
is not a true filing system device, you may copy a file to
the PAR: port.
DELETE --->
Delete selected files and directories (on demand).
RENAME --->
Renames first selected file or directory to the name
or path (on the same device) in the "D" gadget.
MAKEDIR --->
This will create the directory that you have typed in
the "D" gadget. You may use relative paths.
PARENT --->
Goto the parent of the "S" directory. If you click on
the gadget with the right mouse button, you will get
the parent of the "D" gadget.
TYPE --->
Use this to view standard ASCII (readme, docs, etc) on
your CRT. Select the files you want to view, then select
the TYPE gadget. A new window, with the window name
being the file that you are currently viewing, will open.
You can use the proportional gadget to go any place in
the text instantly. Hitting the LEFT mouse button will
take you BACK a page. Hitting the RIGHT mouse button will
take you FORWARD a page. Hit the CLOSE Gadget when you
are through looking at the file. If you hit the right
mouse button on the gadget, TYPE will type a file
to the screen in HEX and ASCII 20 numbers
at a time. Cursor LEFT and RIGHT work like the LEFT and
RIGHT buttons. Cursor UP and DOWN will page four
lines at a time either up or down. The "T" key will
goto the TOP of a file and the "B" key will goto
the bottom of a file.
INFO --->
Used to show the number of USABLE bytes from the DEVICE
associated with the "S" gadget. Hitting the right button
on this gadget will do the same for the "D" gadget.
PRINT --->
Copies the chosen file to PRT:
SWAP --->
Used to flip the S and D windows.
BYTE --->
Adds up the number of bytes of the selected files and
displays the sum and the number of files. Remember
that each file takes up 512 more bytes than indicated
because of its directory entry. (The number in parentheses
is the ABSOLUTE number of bytes it will actually take and
can be directly compared to the SINFO and DINFO numbers.)
RUN --->
"RUNS" the selected files from inside DIRUTIL. If DIRUTIL
was called from CLI, any output from the program is
directed to the calling CLI. Parameters may be passed
to the program by entering them in the E window. You must
have the RUN command in your C: directory. Hitting this
gadget with the right button will EXEC a batch file
from within DirUtil. You must have the files "NEWCLI" and
"ENDCLI" in your c: directory. If the batch file aborts, you
will have to type "ENDCLI" to close the DOS window. If you
Need a newcli, just EXEC a file that is NOT a batch file.
EXEC will abort, but you will have your newcli!
EDITOR --->
This will call the program "ED" in order to edit the selected
files. The editor is a completely separate task and runs
independently of DirUtil once started.
LIST --->
LIST will list the names, sizes, dates of creation and
protection status of ALL files in the filelist. The listing
will be output to the device/file that is specified in the "E"
gadget. If the output file already exists, LIST will append
its data to the end of the existing file.
DATE --->
DATE is a BOOLEAN toggle. If highlighted, the date of creation
and protection status of the files in the filelist will be
displayed instead of their size.
PROTECT --->
Protect a file from deletion by AMIGADOS. The right button
will de-protect a file from deletion by AMIGADOS.
MOVE --->
Same basic principle as RENAME, but assumes that you
want to just move the file to a new directory, not
actually rename it. It will move multiple files from
one directory to another. The "D" gadget should have
the destination path in it, NOT the whole filename
as with RENAME. MOVE will also move whole subdirectories
to another subdirectory, or to ROOT. DO NOT put a / after
the path name, MOVE adds it for you if needed. MOVE is
the recommended way to get a file from one place to
another quickly since the directory need not be reloaded
after the MOVE. MOVE's between DEVICES are supported with
the original file being deleted after a sucessful MOVE.
MOVE will also work equally well moving subdirectories
between devices.
SEARCH --->
Searchs the marked group of files for the pattern found
in the "E" gadget. Upper/lower ARE different. If the "\"
character is found, the next two characters are converted
into a single Hexadecimal digit and used as one
character in the overall search. If a question mark
is found in the pattern, it will match and character
found in that position. The search pattern is
limited to 60 characters. The search has two modes,
SLOW and FAST, which it will choose depending
on how much memory is available in the machine. I HIGHLY
recommend freeing up enough RAM to allow the FAST mode to
run since the SLOW mode is AT LEAST 10 times slower.
The SLOW mode search can be aborted by hitting the CLOSE
GADGET. The FAST mode cannot be aborted.
DISKCOPY --->
DISKCOPY "S" to "D". You can copy with one drive or two
and can copy using the 5.25 inch drive. DISKCOPY ONLY
works on floppy drives, NOT hard disks. DISKCOPY assumes
you are copying disks with the same number of tracks.
ARCV --->
List the contents of an ARC file to the screen.
FIXOBJ --->
FIXOBJ will "pad" a file you have downloaded to enable the
AMIGA scatter loader to process it correctly. It works in
two ways. First, if the file is NOT already padded and is
an executable, FIXOBJ pads it so that upon uploading,
anyone downloading that file need not FIXOBJ it again,
just load and run. FIXOBJ will also pad a file that has
been downloaded but not yet fixed. There is absolutely
nothing wrong with selecting ALL, then FIXOBJ to correct
all the files on a disk. The command WILL NOT pad any
file that is not a stand alone executable ie. ARC files.
SAVE OLD --->
SAVE OLD is a BOOLEAN gadget that will stay lit up if
activated. If enabled, you cannot copy/move/rename a file
on top of a file that already exists in the new directory
path with the same name.
FREEZE --->
Yet another BOOLEAN gadget. If FREEZE mode is active,
any name you highlight will not be de-selected upon
completion of the assigned task. This is useful for
making multiple copies without having to reselect
all the names over again.
SLIDE --->
Another BOOLEAN gadget that selects whether or not the
slideshow mode is turned on. The slideshow mode will
show all selected pictures with scrolling and with a
blank backdrop screen to hide all the clutter on the
Workbench screen. You do not have to click in the upper
left hand corner to view the next picture, the slide-
show will do that for you. You can still abort a
slideshow, just click the backdrop screen to the back and
click inside DirUtil's window as usual.
SHOW --->
SHOW the selected files as IFF pictures. Click in the upper
left hand corner of the screen when you are through
looking at the picture.
CHANGE --->
Perform a DISKCHANGE command on the "D" gadget. Use the right
mouse button to facilitate setting the "D" gadget.
FORMAT --->
FORMAT the "D" gadget. You MUST supply a name for the
disk in the "E" gadget. Format destroys all previous data
on a disk so be careful when using it. Format works ONLY
on 3.5 inch drives and the 5.25 inch Transformer drive
(5.25 drive in next release).
RELABEL --->
Change the name of the disk represented in the "S" gadget
to the name found in the "E" gadget. You MUST supply a
new name and it must not be more than 30 characters.
COMMENT --->
Sets the comment field of the selected files. You must
use the AMIGADOS LIST command or the WorkBench INFO
command to see the comment although DirUtil's COPY
command will replicate the comment on any file you copy
unlike normal AMIGADOS.
KEY --->
This gadget sets the current encryption key for other
commands. This password key is entered into the "E"
gadget and must be at least 5 characters long. After
entering the password, click KEY. The password will
disappear and be stored for later use. If the
CRYPT gadget is lit, this password will be used for
various commands listed below. DirUtil encodes
33.5 K of data per second so using this function
will not slow down operation significantly. The
encryption mode is reversable; ie. copying a file
twice with data encryption turned on will result
in an unchanged file.
CRYPT --->
Another Boolean gadget that selects whether data
encryption mode is active. If lit, any file you TYPE,
COPY, MOVE or SHOW will be crypted/de-crypted according
to the current KEY.
